Norval Bortle

November 3, 1922 — April 26, 2015

Norval Arthur Bortle, age 92, of Centerville, died peacefully Sunday morning, April 26th, 2015 at Marinuka Manor in Galesville with his loving family at his side. Norval was born November 3, 1922 to Arthur and Lulu Bortle. He married Leona Strand June 10, 1942 at the Tamarack Lutheran Church in rural Arcadia.

Norval and his sons farmed on the home farm until the early 1990's. He was an active NFO member for all of his farming years. He worked for Mathy Construction starting in 1965 and retired after twenty plus years. He also drove semi cross country until 2002 when he retired at the age of 80. He also owned his own semi trailer and drove across country in his early years of marriage. He was a very hard worker and gave his all to each and every one of his occupations.

He loved to be with his family and especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved Saturday morning breakfasts and having his children close by. He was an active member of the Tamarack Lutheran Church. Throughout his life, Norval was active in fast pitch softball, curling, and hunting. He loved playing cards and was a very good player.

Norval will be missed dearly by his 6 children: Barbara (Mike) Johnson of Anna, Illinois, Dennis (Beth) Bortle of Centerville, Marilee (Dean) Bishop of Ettrick, Jane (Bill) Amundson of Trempealeau, Mark (Kathy) Bortle of Centerville, and John (Donna) Bortle of Pigeon Falls. He is also survived by his nineteen grandchildren, Shannon (Leanne) Emmons, Eric Emmons and Leah (Tim) Key, Heather Prestil, Heidi (Kevin) Breidel, Melissa (Randy) DuVal, Jeff (Sarah) Bortle, Anthony, Aaron, and Adam Bishop, Jeremy (Sara) Amundson, Sara (Jeff) Halvorsen, Katie (Adam) Brickner, Jason Doelle and Jen (Nathanial) Beuse, Cameron (Justin) Solsrud, Kylee (John) Bautch, Tyler (Callie) Bortle and McKenzee Bortle (Alex Byom); 40 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, 3 sisters, Margaret Ziegler, Janice (Larry) Engen, and Eunice (Robert) Neitzel; brother-in-law, John Salsman and sister-in-law Janice Neitzke, and many, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lulu Bortle, his wife, Leona (Strand) Bortle, son, Leland Bortle, grandson Andrew Bishop, sisters Elaine Lindberg, Vivian Salsman, Delores Williamson, Laura Tiepelman, sister-in-law Elaine Carter, brothers-in-law, Orville Lindberg, Howard Williamson, Ed Tiepelman, Clifford Carter and Maurice Neitzke and many nephews, nieces, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at Tamarack Lutheran Church in rural Arcadia with Pastor Dana Jackson officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wozney-Killian Funeral Home in Arcadia and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Casket carriers will be Norval's grandsons. The honorary pallbearer will be Andrew Bishop.
