Marie Korpal, 83, of Arcadia, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021, at Mayo Clinic Healthcare in La Crosse.
Marie was born in Arcadia on February 16, 1937, to Edward and Sophie (Fonfara) Sonsalla. After graduating high school in 1954, she married Richard Korpal on May 12, 1956, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Arcadia. To this union, the couple was blessed with six children. The pair owned and operated Korpal’s Bar from July of 1958 to 1972. In 1975, Richard and Marie purchased Club 93 and ran the Supper Club until Richard’s passing. Marie enjoyed socializing while bartending, and worked at establishments in Arcadia including Butch’s Bar, Red’s Peanut Tavern and made her famous and delicious salad dressings that were served at Detox. Marie was a hardworking individual who loved to cook, the occasional gambling trip, and spend time with her family. She was a lifetime member of St. Stanislaus/Holy Family Parish Catholic Church, the Holy Family PCCW, and served church luncheons for fundraisers and funerals.
Marie is survived by her sons: Louis “Sod” (Susan) Korpal, Steven (Joan) Korpal, Mark (Dinah) Korpal, and Jason Korpal all of Arcadia; daughter: Debra (Leslie) Samson of Arcadia; 16 grandchildren: Elizabeth and Sophia Korpal, Eric Korpal, Tabitha Samson, April (Adam Gammons) Samson, Heather (Mauro) Gomez, Amber (Alex) Escalera, Valerie (Dylan) Sosalla, Shannon (German) Pecina, Melissa (Patrick) Schock, Miranda (Walter Rice) Korpal, Holly Korpal, Hilary (J.P.) Kupietz, Sydney (Joel Schmitt) Korpal, Jaidyn and Damian Korpal; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; brother: Edward J. Sonsalla; sisters: Margie Kampa and Joan Klink both of Arcadia, Jean Bautch of Independence, and Nancy (Steve) Mauhar of Chippewa Falls; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard in 2002; son: David “Eda”; sister: Theresa (Richard) Sonsalla and a baby sister in infancy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at Holy Family Parish with Father Kyle Laylan officiating. Due to the circumstances surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, limited public visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at church. Masks and social distancing guidelines will be strongly encouraged. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Arcadia.
