Loyal H. Guenther, 78, of rural Fountain City died on Monday, September 15, 2014, at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi, after a long battle with cancer. Loyal was born on December 9, 1935, in the Town of Cross, Buffalo Co., WI to Henry and Bernice (Ratz) Guenther.
Loyal attended Eagle Valley Grade School and graduated from Arcadia Public High School. He received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1958 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He then received a master's degree in physics in 1962 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He worked for McDonald-Douglas Corporation in St. Louis, MO for 24 years. Loyal retired at the age of 45 and moved to the farm where he grew up in Eagle Valley, between Arcadia and Fountain City, WI. He planted many nut trees on the farm and enjoyed gardening. At one time, he was President of the Midwest Nut Growers Association.
In his younger days Loyal played softball and basketball. After moving back to Wisconsin he enjoyed attending high school sports events in both Arcadia and Fountain City. Loyal was named Top Fan in Arcadia 2 times. He endowed a scholarship at both high schools that is awarded annually to the top mathematics senior at each school. He also enjoyed playing cards and golfing. He served on the Town of Cross Board, was involved with the Buffalo Co. Historical Society, served as treasurer of the Eagle Valley Cemetery Board and was involved with the Friends of the Eagle Valley Church.
Loyal is survived by his brother: Ronald (Leatrice) Guenther of Farmington, MN; sister: Edith Thompson of Rushford, MN; aunt Violet Comero of Arcadia; uncles Jim (Rosemary) Guenther of Eau Claire and Ernest (Jane) Guenther of Albuquerque, NM; 2 nieces and 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Karen Belden.
A Memorial Service will be held on October 5, 2014, at 3:00 PM at the Eagle Valley Church with Pastor Lora Sturm officiating. Burial will be in the Eagle Valley Cemetery in rural Fountain City.
