Gary Charles Thewis, 72, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. It is a day of tremendous sadness as Gary passed peacefully from our presence.
He was born April 29, 1945 in La Crosse, to Harry and Selma (Erickson) Thewis. Gary attended Peck School and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1963. Gary earned his teaching degree from Juneau County Teachers College in 1968 and taught for five years at the Green School in Waumandee. He met his wife, Ann Smith, while attending college. They were married in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on December 27, 1966, and she was the love of his life for the next 50 years.
Gary loved farming and took over the family farm with his twin brother, Gale, in 1963. He was an excellent farmer and continued farming in partnership with his brothers Gale and James, nephew Harlan Thewis, and great nephew Benjamin Thewis until the time of his death. Gary had great respect for land conservation and practiced sustainable farming. In 2006, the Thewis Family farm was the recipient of the regarded State of Wisconsin Outstanding Farmer Award. In 2012, Gary was honored to receive the Century Farm certification by the State of Wisconsin in recognition of 100 years of continuous family ownership.
Left to remember his deep love and to honor his memory are his wife, Ann; daughter, Joy (Mike) Koglin and their children Michael and Clara; daughter, Kate (Gerald) Albrecht and their children Estella, Camille, and Katarina; and daughter, Amy (Kelly) Ramswick and their children Callin and Grace. He is survived by his brother, James Thewis; twin brother, Gale (Rose) Thewis; sisters and brothers-in-laws Kathy Smith, Henry and Norma Smith, William and Lucy Schroeder, and Jane Justesen; nieces and nephews; cousins; and many good friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Selma Thewis; infant brother, John; father and mother-in-law, Herbert and Margaret Smith; and brother-in-law, Eugene Piette.
