Aaron R. Smieja, 91, of Arcadia died on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse. Aaron was born on April 14, 1924, in Independence, WI to Victor and Eleanor (Bisek) Smieja. Aaron married Antonia "Toni" Pronschinske on August 8, 1950, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Arcadia.
He worked for Ladish Company in Milwaukee, Clarence Weiss Trucking in Arcadia, and the Trempealeau County Highway Department in construction and maintenance for 25 years. Aaron was a member of Holy Family Parish.
Aaron is survived by his wife: Antonia "Toni" of Arcadia; two daughters: Sandy (Tom) Schmitt of Brookfield, WI and Judy (Mike) Cousins of Mankato, MN; four grandsons: Chris (Jillian) Cousins, Matt (Jen) Cousins, Brian Schmitt and Kevin Schmitt; five great grandchildren: Coral Sandstrom, Braydon, Gabrielle, Waylon and Shea Cousins; one brother: Maynard (Irene) Smieja of Indian Creek; one sister: Darlene Kamla of Arcadia, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Bernice Pampuch.
Aaron took a great amount of pride and joy in his perfectly manicured lawn, which everyone noticed and complimented him on. He enjoyed cooking but most of all spending time with his family. He was a man of many trades/talents, "he could and would do anything for anyone".
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015, at 11:00 AM, at Holy Family Parish, with Monsignor Joseph Hirsch officiating. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Wozney-Killian Funeral Home where there will be a 7:00 PM rosary; they may also call on Monday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, rural Arcadia.
